Instructions:

Put the MacVerter Metric file in your Apple Menu Items folder (or anywhere else you like; itﾕs not restricted to desk accessory use). Pick MacVerterMetric 2.3 from the Apple Menu to use it, or double-click it if itﾕs anywhere else. When the MacVerter starts, youﾕll see a window with about fifty fields you can type numbers into, organized by type of measurement (area, volume, weight, temperature, distance, not in that order). Type a number into any one, and youﾕll see it converted automatically (MacVerted!) into all appropriate corresponding units. Thatﾕs all you have to do. MacVerter Metric does the rest.
Cut, Copy and Paste work as youﾕd expect them to. If you paste non-numeric input into a field, youﾕll get a warning explaining that the computer doesnﾕt know what youﾕre talking about. Hit Command-A (or Select All from the Edit menu), hit your Delete key, and try again, this time with only numbers.
MacVerter also supports Macintosh Drag & Drop. You can drag and drop numbers between other applications and the MacVerter, for extra ease of use.
NEW IN VERSION 2.3! The MacVerter now runs in native mode on PowerMacs. Its conversion routines do their number-crunching at RISC speed (yeah, like they werenﾕt fast enough before). Also see International Versions below for notes about enhanced support for international numbering systems.
Accuracy:

It would be unethical to present this program as what itﾕs not. In every case, the MacVerter is accurate to at least three significant figures. In most cases itﾕs accurate beyond that. Converting within a single measuring system (from inches to miles, for example, or liters to cubic meters) should always be completely accurate; the conversion tables between systems, believe it or not, are published with different figures in different reliable sources, and the figure for one (inches to feet, for example) doesnﾕt always multiply out to match the figure for another (feet to kilometers, say). So weﾕve tried to find the happiest mediums we can. For most people, this will be more than adequately accurate. If youﾕre a space shuttle technician trying to determine tolerances for heat-protection tiles, let us know and we can come up with something more precise.
MacVerter version 3 will probably revamp the conversion system to bring it to an even higher degree of accuracy.
Compatibility:

As far as we know, MacVerter Metric works with every System 7.x Mac: Color, mono, grayscale, big screens, Classic-size screens, Macs that have Color QuickDraw built in and Macs that have only basic QuickDraw. Itﾕs been run on PowerBooks and PowerMacs of just about every stripe. Let us know if you have any trouble with the MacVerter (see Complaints, below). The program will not, however, work under System 6. If you *need* to use MacVerter under System 6, let us know, and weﾕll see what we can arrange.

Shareware spreads like dandelion seeds, only hopefully it wonﾕt cause as many allergic reactions. Feel free to distribute MacVerter Metric wherever shareware is being posted, as long as this documentation travels with it, unmodified, and as long as users are told clearly that they must pay Jumbo Productions directly for the software. If you are putting MacVerter Metric in a collection of software for which you are charging more than a nominal distribution fee, you must notify Jumbo Productions (see addresses above). If you are distributing the MacVerter as part of a collection of software (i.e., not via modem), send a copy of the collection to Jumbo Productions at the address above, so we can see what people are talking about if they call in with complaints. International Versions:

MacVerter Metric was written for English-language users, but itﾕs relatively easy to customize for other languages, and obviously may be useful outside the English-speaking world. If youﾕd like a version of the MacVerter that works in your native language, let us know and weﾕll do our best to accommodate you.
NEW IN VERSION 2.3! The MacVerter now provides better support for international numbering systems. Previously, people who used decimal separators and thousands separators other than the period and comma (for instance, if your system was set to write numbers as 1 234,56 instead of 1,234.56) got error messages that kept them from using the program. Now the MacVerter should be compatible with your local numbering system.
IMPORTANT EXCEPTION: If your Numbers control panel is set for a numbering system that uses the apostrophe (') as a thousands or decimals separator (for instance, if your system writes numbers as 1'234'567,89), the MacVerter will ask you to change that setting. If this is a problem, keep in mind that once youﾕve launched the MacVerter, you can change the setting back to whatever you prefer to use for other programs; the MacVerter will continue using the numbering system that was designated when it was launched.

Version 3 of the MacVerter is in the works. Weﾕre adding lots of spiffy new features (would you believe MacVerter Kitchen? MacVerter Olde English? MacVerter for Desktop Publishing? MacVerter Science?), but the stripped-down, easy-to-use interface will remain the same. Let us know if you like what you see, and let us know if you want to see version 3 when it becomes available! Version 2.0, for complicated reasons, was the first release version of the MacVerter.
Versions 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 included exactly the same code but fixed e-mail addresses for contacting Jumbo Productions.
Version 2.1 enhanced the sonic dimension of the MacVerter. This version also improved the MacVerterﾕs low-memory behavior, something that shouldnﾕt be necessary as long as you donﾕt change the programﾕs memory requirements in the Finder Get Info box.
Version 2.1a fixed the first reported bug, a conversion error that caused certain conversions of area measures to be one decimal place off. An offending zero was stripped out of the code, and the program was recompiled, lacking nothing and better for it.
Version 2.2 added Mac Drag & Drop functions and improved grayscale readability.
Version 2.2a fixed the styling in this very document. The version number of the software itself remained the same; the -a suffix only applied to the distribution archive.
Version 2.2.1 tweaked an error message users with basic QuickDraw were getting.
Version 2.2.2 fixed a minor problem with color tints that only appeared on PowerMacs. It also supplied a solution to the problem of world hunger, and it took great strides toward ensuring world peace. Incorporated in the MacVerter Version 2.2.2 was code that clarified the behavior of subatomic particles in the high-gravity environment of black holes and provided important clues to the origins and destiny of the universe, including the definitive word on God. Also, this version pinpointed the location of the missing arms of the Venus de Milo. Unfortunately, MacVerter Version 2.2.2 was never released in a final, public version, and the source code was scrapped after a hard disk crash corrupted it irretrievably. Apologies for any inconvenience to end users.
Version 2.3 adds PowerMac support for the first time. MacVersions are now done using native PowerPC number-crunching routines. Version 2.3 is available in separate editions for 68K Macs and PowerPC Macs, as well as in a fat binary edition. This file travels with all three editions. Version 2.3 also fixes a minor bug in Apple Event support and improves compatibility with international numerics (see International Versions above).
